AI - a new shell game?

Recently I have been thinking of the story of Narcissus who fell in love with his reflection in the water and was captivated by it to the exclusion of all else.

Is AI the reflection of human wisdom? Confusingly, beguilingly, familiar but just the silhouette of intellect? A mirage? A magician's trick for childish minds? A curse in the guise of salvation? Are we a running on a treadmill thinking we are moving forward, captivated by the allure of a chore-less future with every whim met and every disease avoided?

The recent documentary, "Burnout — When does work start feeling pointless?" asks similar unsettling questions, not about AI specifically but with a similarly skeptical viewpoint on the modern business world.
“…for the most part, when people back then imagined what the world was going to be like… they thought we are all going to be living lives of leisure…. The question then is, why aren't we?”

Have we taken a wrong turn, diverted from our destiny while war, social division, wealth disparity and natural disasters worsen? It should be evident to anyone watching the world that strong forces are acting against humanity and, not withstanding the multitude of AI idealists proclaiming salvation through technology, it will not save us from ourselves.
While some people such as Elon Musk and Ray Kurzweil imagine a day where we start to live forever, common sense suggests this is impossible as well as undesirable.
